The J&J Rating, explained.

Every recruit on this site has one number next to their name: their J&J Rating, on a 0–5 scale. Here's exactly how we calculate it — no black-box scout politics, no inflated 1-star floors.

The 70 / 15 / 10 / 5 formula

Each prospect's J&J Rating is a weighted blend of four components:

70%
Community Film
Avg of every fan rating + per-position trait sliders
15%
Production
Position-normalized stats vs. class peers
10%
Accolades
Awards weighted by tier (All-State > All-District)
5%
Measurables
Size, 40, strength benchmarks for class
Why 70% community? Because film doesn't lie. A scout watches dozens of guys a year; the J&J community watches hundreds. When real football people — coaches, parents, fans, evaluators — all see the same things on tape, that's signal. Recruiting services flatten that into one paid scout's opinion. We let the crowd in.

The 1–5 star scale

A prospect needs at least 15 community ratings before stars are displayed. Below that, the profile shows "Needs more film" so a small sample of friends can't skew the score. If the weighted average comes out below 1.0, the page shows zero stars and a note — no inflated minimums.

The rating modal

When you click "Rate & Comment" on a prospect, you'll see:

Your rating averages with every other rater on that prospect to form the 70% community component.

The accolades score (10%)

Accolades are weighted by tier and totaled, then mapped onto the 0–5 scale via a soft cap (tanh) so volume alone can't max it out. A few examples:

The measurables score (5%)

Combines 40-yard time (electronic preferred over hand), height, and weight against typical HS football benchmarks. Faster + bigger pushes this up; missing data just leaves the 5% to be redistributed across the other components.

Transparency

Every prospect's profile shows the component breakdown — you can see exactly what's driving their final number. Disagree with the community? Submit a rating with your own analysis and move the needle.

FAQ

Can a prospect's profile be removed?

Yes. Email 4thandwardpodcast@gmail.com from the prospect's coach email or a parent's email and we'll take it down. For under-18s, profiles are removed on parental request, no questions asked.

Can I edit my own rating?

Yes — re-open the rating modal on a prospect you've already rated and submit. Your previous rating is replaced (one rating per browser per prospect).

What stops vote-brigading?

Browser-level dedup (one rating per browser per prospect) and the 15-rating minimum before stars appear. Suspicious activity surfaces on the admin dashboard and ratings can be wiped.

Are paid scouts allowed?

Everyone is welcome. The whole point of J&J is that no one's opinion counts more than anyone else's. Watch the film, give your honest take.
